Trying this again

Well friendos its been more than 2 years since my last blog post here at the old blogspot and let me tell you: blogger DOSE NOT make it easy to log back in after that long. Why the fuck can't the main email address for your blogger profile be a gmail account?...GOOGLE OWNS BLOGGER!!!! crazy. Anyways, I've been gone for a real hot minute now mostly I was on a long journey for 7 months in Southeast Asia. If you weren't following along you can catch up with that adventure time over at http://huthinasia.tumblr.com/. Just the story of a man, his smart phone, and a pair of jean shorts.  I got some pretty good feed back on that so I figured I should keep the blogging going as an outlet for my literary or journalistic tangents.

Since I've been back for 3 months now obviously I have had plenty of time to miss a ton of deadlines and botch up a job at a print shop so now I am unemployed and seemingly unemployable in some ways. A lot of new found stress over here in the old Huth house hold but don't worry, I'm just going to drink through it.

I did manage to make a new ArtCrank print. Unfortunately artCrank was 8 weeks ago. I stopped working on my art crank print in order to create time for a print obligation over at the shop...which ended up falling through anyway...but to put a positive spin on things I'm 10 months early for ArtCrank 2014! Jk, I'm just going to release this one on my own and hope that the sales cover the cost of printing at least. And hope the economic bubble for bicycle themed prints hasn't popped yet. So help a brother out go over to http://huthbot.storenvy.com/ and pick up a presale copy at the special discounted rate maybe pick up a few for mom and dad too. They make terrible stocking stuffer: but seriously folks, please be courteous and keep them in a tube if you're going to give them as a gift. Its real live art people.

here it is along with some process photos.

Assembling images, reference, and rough over sketching elements to get an idea of composition

Final line drawing micron on paper scanned in and ready for color.
first touches of color going on quickly as blocking to give a better idea of composition and lighting

Made a late in the game decision that the composition need another element in the background to give more depth to the over all image.
Working on the clouds. Most of this got simplified and covered up by other elements I'm just posting it so you know I really did spend that much time working every element and then pared it back as a conscious design decision.
Final...well jpg final. I wish I had a photo of the final print to show but its not in the budget. It takes money to make money and I need to sell about 30 of these before I can even afford to get them printed...so go get to buying them already, squares. Presale beings at 12pm MST over at  http://huthbot.storenvy.com/

art krunk

What a shit show. You would think that I would be getting used to, or at least better at, my time management skills but NO! I double booked myself all week long then went into an overnight design that turned into an 8am print session with an 11am deadline. but in the powerful words of Montell Jordan- "This is how we do it"

Stockholm Syndrome

had the bottom fall out while out of town the other day and had to pull a 24 hour design print and ship session for the band Stockholm Syndrome's US tour... not too bad for a stress fest of issues and crazy expensive drop ship fees.

2 color print on classic crest pewter I have a few of these left for $20

ummmm... the ums

So I put together this show during the 11th annual Denver Post Underground Music Showcase. Most people didn't go cause we had amazing AC and free beer, I can see why you would be uninterested. this is the poster that I made for the UMS this year. Its a little brighter and a little cheerier than the normal old sour pussed Huth.

they are HUGE! 26X40 a full parent sheet of cougar 80lbs cover with a 3 color print that overlaps for all kinds of color variations limited run of 55. $25 I have a few left

Mogwai!

I got to do a poster for one of my favorite progressive rock out fits Mogwai, Scottish ambient rock at its finest. It was a crunch deadline due to... me being an idiot. But it is done and I think it turned out pretty strong considering design, sep, print, and ship all happened within 3 days...rough.

OMG poster show at 1988

Just go to do a piece for the required reading show put on by OMG posters over at 1988 gallery in LA. Each artist was able to pick a book and illustrate a version of the cover. I chose one of my favorite tales of teen angst and rebellious youth, Siddhartha. I know if you have read this book you would say there are no tigers or smoke even mentioned in the text. And I would say to that "you are right" but that's the enigmatic symbolism I came up with, so deal with it.

there was also a brown variant that sold out at the show. I have both and several art pint versions that have no text or Damask pattern in the background

Siddhartha- book print from 1988 5 color screen print signed and numbered edition of 80 $25
dreaming tiger- art print edition of 10 5 color screen print signed and numbered as AP's $25
both prints are around 14X22 on 80lbs classic crest celery or sandstorm paper

Did these posters for Lucero's US tour it was a big tour something like 36 dates over 2 months. We ended up doing 90 of each of the 4 designs and they sold out entirely through the band before the tour was over...then they sold out through me about2 weeks later but enjoy looking and not touching.

each poster was 16X26 on 100lbs classic crest natural edition of 90 artist proof sets were signed and numbered of 10. Some originals may go up for sale depending on local purchasing so stay tuned.

hooded

I just finished painting for Something Independent's "the Art of Winter" show during SIA. This group is bringing together local artists and Colorado based snow sport companies to promote our brands and culture to the broader scope of the industry. This deck will be displayed along Larimer square for the week of SIA 26th-31st and will be auctioned at the reception at Green Russell on the 26th.

This board was really impromptu; no preliminary sketches, little reference, no concepting, just paint and it ended up seeing a few different versions and drastic modifications before it was turned in

5X1 feet acrylic on snowboard opening bid is $300.

the hunt

Exciting Exciting times. Next week Denver will be hosting SIA for the second time. We will be hosting a group art show called "the Hunt" in the new renovation of crema/black cloud workshop. Tons of great artists from all over the snowsports industries and just great artists in general will deck the walls of the new expanded gallery space during the larimer st. block party that will host a rail jam and music events throughout the day on the 28th of January 2011.

Mongooseded

Finished this painting after 6 months in a holding pattern. I originally made the image back in July for the band Rosetta's show at the hidive but for some reason couldn't hammer out a finish on it until now. Whatever, it will be available next week 1-26-2011 at the "Hunt" group art show at the Larimer block party during SIA. I will post the flier for that as well.

Mongoosed 12X15 acrylic on panel $200

3 color screen print 20X26 $20....i think...let me know and we'll work it out also available at the "Hunt" show.

touch up

Just before thnx gvng I went down to Kaladi to touch up a mural I painted there a number of years ago. Originally designed as a graffiti deterrent the mural was commissioned by the shop to resemble a mix of Catholic Iconography and modern street art and it has really become a landmark in the DU neighborhood. But due to the fact that I incorporated a lot of wheat pasting and wood panel installation the weather in CO has really given this mural a proper beating. Unfortunately I never got good documentation of it while it was fresh on the wall and I only just recently took photos of it. I am omitting the ratty parts to save face but understand the wall is 44FEET X 19FEET and the main character is a good 15feet tall. huge, one man, one ladder, 2.5 months of work.

the patron saint of coffee is, a close up of the main character St. Drogo as he spreads the zen of coffee over his followers.

the electrical boxes at the end of the wall feature small portraits of a number of saints and I have, from time to time, found flowers and rosaries attached to the faced of the mural, and I thought that was pretty neat.

seasons f'ng greetings

Just hand pulled some seasonal cards for Crema coffee and Designer Nigel "3 star"Penhale who broke an uncontested world record for most F-bombs used in a holiday card. Thought they looked nice wanted you to think so to.

so be nice and you might fucking get one.

Winter Soiree

So I was asked to do a sow poster for Nataniel Ratliff's 4 annual winter soiree at the Fox theater. It featured performances by Nathaniel Rateliff, the Centennial, Harpoontang, and Paper bird under an alias for booking reasons. here is the poster

mod livin it up

So we have a show up till...sometime in January. Its a cool show a lot of diverse work, but it is at a cluttered furniture store way out on colfax called Mod Livin' . Really neat stuff but high prices and low art sales. So I made my contribution to the show more design oriented a few show posters but mostly some nice mono prints.

These are available as a set 4- 12X18 unique one offs each number is hand designed and hand pulled to insure uniqueness. $120 for the set

I also have 2 of my favorite mono prints of all time both are from the last 2 years of art crank prints, hanging in the show either of which I would be happy to part with, unframed, for $200. but I don't have photos so let me know if you are interested and I will see what I can dig up.

anal bum cover process

So this little project for local Denver whu-dup funk band Bop Skizzum took an unforeseen turn for the metal. I had a nice little concept cover designed out for their latest 7" titled Beauty Queen all set to roll when they went off the Pushead deep end and wanted to stick with something a bit more macabra.

here is the full process of what came to be

I was given some images by band of things that they had been kicking around and they were really into album cover for DJ Shadow's-The outsider by The designer Paul Insect . Eventually they picked this image which was crudely thrown together in a matter of minutes just to give the band a concept idea. Bare in mind most clients whom call me are on a tight deadline and we went from concept to final up on itunes in less than a weeks time.

From there they left it up to me to make it a bit more "funky" and add some color and my own kind of touch too it. Of course what I do next is so far above and beyond what I needed to it is kind of pathetic. I made 2 YES TWO different paintings (you know with the brushes and the tactile mediums and all) that I proceeded to discard in the name of the basic line drawing whihc is next.

This is the cleaned up fine line drawing I made from the painting above. I went from full color painting and regressed back to black line drawing. Don't say I never learned process progression while snowboarding, I mean going to art school.

I scanned that drawing; added some "funk" colors; came up with a text based hand drawn logo; slapped it on the ass; and sent it home with mommy...er something. 45+ plus hours to layout front and back of the sleeve and the spindle covers, which are probably the best part of the whole project and I still feel like the concept I preferred would have been not only more appropriate but also more interesting. maybe I will post that someday but that aint today, cause honestly I may sell it to someone at some point. 4 hours billed...thanks local band budgets because of you I can pay almost half my rent...most of the time.

I will be selling the paintings and some hand tinted prints soon, the album is available on itunes now and I will shoot some photos of the actual vinyl when it comes in after the new year. I am sure there will be a an album launch party at some bar but I probably wont be there...cause I'm broke.

buy stuff from me.
